JOHN CEFALU, MD

John Cefalu, MD, is an anesthesiologist and fellowship-trained interventional pain management specialist. Dr. Cefalu is highly trained in minimally invasive and non-invasive interventional including spinal cord, dorsal root ganglion, and peripheral nerve stimulation, intrathecal drug delivery, Vertiflex, minimally invasive lumbar decompression, sacroiliac joint fusion, kyphoplasty, basivertebral nerve ablation, and even ketamine infusion. He treats a variety of disorders including cervical and lumbar spinal stenosis, fibromyalgia, peripheral neuropathy, lumbar post-laminectomy syndrome, complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS), abdominal pain, pelvic pain, and cancer pain. Dr. Cefalu trained under Salim Hayek, MD, one of the top interventional pain physicians in the country and the current president of the North American Neuromodulation Society (NANS).

EDUCATION
Dr. Cefalu began his career with a bachelor’s degree in neuroscience from Centenary College of Louisiana followed by a master’s degree in neuroscience from Louisiana State University School of Medicine focusing on neuroinflammation and pain processing pathways prior to pursuing a career in medicine. He was a competitive swimmer throughout his lifetime and competed as a division I athlete at the collegiate level breaking state and collegiate records. He graduated from Louisiana State University School of Medicine in New Orleans, Louisiana. He completed his internship and anesthesiology residency at Louisiana State University in New Orleans. He then undertook a multidisciplinary pain medicine fellowship at University Hospitals Health System/Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio.

PERSONAL INTERESTS AND COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT
Dr. Cefalu is originally from Slidell, Louisiana. Before joining Centurion Spine in Waycross with Dr. Gage, he did his fellowship in Cleveland, Ohio. He worked as a swim and dive instructor during his residency and fellowship training. He continues to compete competitively in swimming and enjoys fishing, diving, and spearfishing.
