Guide to Spinal Stenosis

Spinal Stenosis

Spinal stenosis is a common condition among people over the age of 50. It is usually caused by general wear and tear of the spine with age. While spinal stenosis can be a very painful condition, it is also very treatable. The physicians at Centurion Spine & Pain Centers are experts in diagnosing and treating spinal stenosis.

What Is

Spinal Stenosis?

Spinal stenosis is a narrowing of the spinal canal. The spine can begin to degenerate with age, and as that happens, the spinal canal narrows from arthritis and ligament hypertrophy (or thickening), which causes the ligaments to protrude into the spinal canal. This narrowing puts pressure on the nerves in the spine, causing pain while standing and walking.

Symptoms of

Spinal Stenosis

Some patients with spinal stenosis don’t experience any symptoms. For those who do experience symptoms, they usually begin slowly and worsen over time.

Symptoms of spinal stenosis can include:

  • Pain and cramping in the back, buttocks and/or legs.
  • Leg heaviness or weakness with standing and walking.
  • Pain relief when you bend forward or sit down.
